DublinTown Christmas lights beginning to go up

  • Wed 05 October, 2022

DublinTown has commenced putting up the city’s Christmas lights so they are ready for switch on in mid-November. This year 25 streets will have energy efficient spectacular lighting for the festive season.

For more than 13 years DublinTown has been responsible for decorating the city in stunning Christmas lights for the busiest shopping and socialising period of the year. Their presence gives a sense of joy to the city and adds to the buzz and excitement as Christmas approaches, attracting thousands of people who take selfies beneath the iconic displays.

The Christmas lights are by far the biggest task that DublinTown undertakes on behalf of the members and the people of Dublin. It takes 30 people working through the night, over 4 weeks and over 200 hours to completely erect all the lights. Each single bulb and fixture is tested by DublinTown’s lighting contractors in advance.

In line with previous years there will be no public event this year, but the lights will be officially switched on in November and light up the city each day until early January.

In the time that DublinTown has been responsible for the Christmas lights the organisation has grown the number of streets that are decorated and supplied them with safe and sustainable electrical infrastructure. All the lighting used in the DublinTown’s Christmas lights are low energy LED lighting which are regulated by time clocks so the time the lights are illuminated on each street is controlled. The entire Christmas lights display on Grafton Street for example use just one third of the electricity used by just one home electric shower.
